In the wake of devastating 2005 earthquake, Save the Children initiated a milt-sectorial recovery and development programme for the earthquake vulnerable families through different donor agencies. Most significant of District Battagram was “Partnership for Recovery and Development of Allai (PRDA)” a five year (2007-2011) programme implemented by consortium of both international and national NGOs. Based on success of PRDA programme, Save the Children four years follow up district wise integrated initiative “Programme for Establishment Partnership and Stability through Integrated Development in Battagram (PEPAS)” funded by Embassy of Kingdome of the Netherlands (EKN).. The overall goal of the programme is: Improved resilience among fragile communities through increased learning and development opportunities in education and livelihoods’ environment.
Overall objective of the baseline survey was to establish a rigorous baseline study with a particular emphasis on collecting data on indicators on a number of levels. The baseline study was primarily quantitative with inclusion of some qualitative elements as well. Seven different tools were used to collect information from children (of Katchi and Grade One), teachers, school management, parents, and education system level. Katchi class children were assessed using School Readiness Assessment (SRA) and Grade One students were assessed using literacy and numeracy boost tools.
The services provided by the firms included research tools refinement and translation, training of field enumerators, data collection from 48 schools located in two tehsils of districts Battagram, data editing and coding, data analysis, and baseline report development. Data editing was done by professional researchers and data was entered in Census Survey Program (CSPRO). Data analysis was done using a statistical package (SPSS). The final report was drafted for the Client which included the data analysis, findings, and recommendations. The whole exercise was done in close coordination of education department Battagram.
